Our Firm

Norton Basu LLP is a minority woman owned law firm that focuses on estate planning and probate issues throughout the Bay Area. Founded by Zakiya Norton and Somita Basu, the firm provides real world advice to clients in order to get real results in the most practical way possible. Ms. Norton and Ms. Basu met while volunteering for a legal aid organization in San Jose, where they discovered a similar common sense attitude towards the practice of law and a shared desire to serve the minority community.

Our Philosophy

Our goal is to help our clients navigate the legal system as efficiently and effectively as possible while providing practical and compassionate advice.

Community Service & Pro Bono

Service to the community is a core principle at Norton Basu. Co-founders Zakiya Norton and Somita Basu met while volunteering for a legal aid organization in San Jose, Bay Area Legal Aid. It was this united sense of purpose and common belief that everyone should have access to the legal system that first brought Zakiya and Somita together as friends and then as law partners. Today, Norton Basu is committed to educating the community on the importance of estate planning and how to navigate the legal system after the death of a loved one.

As a minority women owned law firm, Norton Basu is uniquely positioned to understand the cultural, financial, and legal needs of minority communities throughout the Bay Area. Co-founder Somita Basu lived overseas for over a decade, living amongst many different Eastern and Western culture. Co-founder Zakiya Norton has volunteered and interned in many areas of law, bringing her into contact with many different types of clients with a wide variety of legal needs. It is a priority of Norton Basu to serve minority communities, who are often the most adversely impacted by inadequate planning for the transfer of family assets to the next generation.
