Our Firm

Norton Basu LLP focuses on estate planning and probate issues throughout the Bay Area.  Founded by Zakiya Norton and Somita Basu, the firm provides real world advice to clients in order to get real results in the most practical way possible.

It is a priority of Norton Basu to work with minority communities, who are often the most adversely impacted by inadequate planning for the transfer of family assets to the next generation. As a minority women owned law firm, Norton Basu is uniquely positioned to understand the cultural, financial, and legal needs of these communities throughout the Bay Area.

Founding Principal and Partner of Norton Basu LLP

Zakiya Norton is a Founding Principal of Norton Basu LLP.  Admitted to the Nevada State Bar in 2010 and the California State Bar in 2013, Ms. Norton has experience in all aspects of litigation.  She currently focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning, probate, conservatorships and litigation issues.

Ms. Norton is committed to keeping her client’s interests at heart and reaching timely resolutions of difficult situations.  Within the estate planning field she handles a number of complex issues ranging from preparation of wills and revocable living trusts to forming family limited partnerships and limited liability companies.   Ms. Norton makes it a priority to provide individualized counseling and representation in all areas of estate planning and listens carefully to her client’s problems to deliver representation that is both thoughtful and effective.

Ms. Norton is a member of the American Bar Association, including its section on Real Property, Trusts and Estates.  Ms. Norton is also a member of  BWLNC (Black Women Lawyers of Northern California), the Charles Houston Bar Association and the California Association of Black Lawyers.

After graduating from law school, she gained civil litigation experience at a general practice, civil litigation law firm in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Ms. Norton is dedicated to giving back to her community and continues to do extensive volunteer work.

A native of the Bay Area, Ms. Norton grew up in Milpitas and currently resides in the South Bay with her family.

Founding Principal and Partner

Somita Basu is a Founding Principal of Norton Basu LLP.  Ms. Basu began her career in financial services and insurance and has lived and worked across the globe, working with blue chip Fortune 500 companies.  Her career has taken her from the New York City metropolitan area to India and Singapore, where she gained a unique perspective on global business practices and cultures.   She has worked in senior management positions with a culturally diverse workforce.

Having lived abroad for 13 years, Ms. Basu is particularly sensitive to how different cultural views can influence decision-making and risk appetite.  She brings this holistic outlook to help her clients address legal problems, always taking the time to explain issues in terms clients can easily understand.

Ms. Basu addresses complex issues in estate planning and probate cases, always keeping in mind the cultural ramifications of immigrant cultures. Ms. Basu is an experienced writer, having worked on international speeches and articles while based in Singapore, and contributes to the Norton Basu blog.

Ms. Basu is a member of the American Bar Association, including its section on Real Property, Trusts and Estates.  She is also a member of the Silicon Valley Bar Association, which focuses exclusively on the issues of estate planning and probate.   She is actively engaged in pro bono representation and has volunteered significant time with legal aid services organizations.

Ms. Basu currently lives in the South Bay area with her family.
